We know that few people are aware of what this complex cultural phenomenon of translation entails. Below, we will address some major aspects, from the translation perceived as a rewrite, to the possibilities and chances of a successful literary translation, to the condition of the translator or to the reception of the translation activity, to the deadlines that the translation implies or to the status of traductology as a science of translating text from one language into another.

False friends have developed in many languages over the years, for various reasons. For example, in some cases, the two false friends have similar origins, perhaps having both been borrowed from a third language, but their meanings have deviated over time. In other cases, however, the words could have completely different origins, but because pronunciations and spellings shift gradually, they have both ended up looking or sounding similar.

Starting with the definition of the translation - the communication of the meaning of a source-language text by means of an equivalent target-language text, below are some tips for a correct and comprehensive translation:

Use Simple, Clear Phrasing

When writing for translation purposes, use simple and clear phrasing. Choose words that are short and simple over longer, more flowery words. This will help make the translation more precise.

The English word translation derives from the Latin word “translatio”, which comes from “trans”, across + “ferre”, to carry or to bring (“-latio” in turn coming from “latus”, the past participle of “ferre”). Thus, “translatio” is a “carrying across” or a “bringing across”: in this case, of a text from one language to another.

While talking about translation and interpretation, many people often ask questions regarding its history and beginning. It is perhaps impossible to trace the beginning of interpretation, as spoken language was developed many years before the written system. However, historians all over the world have tried to study ancient documents and relics to discover the secrets of translation.

The word translation itself is derived from a Latin term meaning "to bring or carry across". The Ancient Greek term is 'metaphrasis' ("to speak across") and this gives us the term 'metaphrase' (a "literal or word-for-word translation") - as contrasted with 'paraphrase' ("a saying in other words"). This distinction was laid at the heart of the theory of translation throughout its history.
