Starting with the definition of the translation - the communication of the meaning of a source-language text by means of an equivalent target-language text, below are some tips for a correct and comprehensive translation:

Use Simple, Clear Phrasing

When writing for translation purposes, use simple and clear phrasing. Choose words that are short and simple over longer, more flowery words. This will help make the translation more precise.

The English word translation derives from the Latin word “translatio”, which comes from “trans”, across + “ferre”, to carry or to bring (“-latio” in turn coming from “latus”, the past participle of “ferre”). Thus, “translatio” is a “carrying across” or a “bringing across”: in this case, of a text from one language to another.

While talking about translation and interpretation, many people often ask questions regarding its history and beginning. It is perhaps impossible to trace the beginning of interpretation, as spoken language was developed many years before the written system. However, historians all over the world have tried to study ancient documents and relics to discover the secrets of translation.

The word translation itself is derived from a Latin term meaning "to bring or carry across". The Ancient Greek term is 'metaphrasis' ("to speak across") and this gives us the term 'metaphrase' (a "literal or word-for-word translation") - as contrasted with 'paraphrase' ("a saying in other words"). This distinction was laid at the heart of the theory of translation throughout its history.

Since the British Empire's dispersal of English to different parts of the world, the language has taken on many forms. Today's English is the result of hundreds of years of evolution, so why would we not expect it to keep changing? Here's what it might become by the 22nd century.

Tourism is one of the industries most needing translation, due to the diversity of the people, languages and cultures in contact with each other, and also the ever-increasing demands for localization of contents in multiple languages. Essentially, translation forms part of the effort to prepare each country for foreign tourists, who do not necessarily speak the local language, so these tourists can discover that country’s culture and what it has to offer visitors. This need to translate content related to travel, culture and tourism cuts across various formats - websites, catalogues, brochures, menus, flyers or signage, in the various business areas in which the tourist industry moves.
