Whenever I travel outside of my usual milieu, I like to buy local newspapers and watch at least a bit of local TV, just for the fun of it. These are some of the best tools to immerse yourself in the day-to-day life of locals and to see exactly how insane the place you are visiting can be. It was during such travels that I discovered the immense gap in the way different countries treat their movie and TV audiences. Greek televisions use subtitles (which makes it really easy for English-speaking foreigners to watch and understand things), while their Spanish counterparts dub absolutely everything into submission. Americans make fun of subtitles (even when they find themselves in need of them in order to watch the latest foreign-language indie critics gush over or, even better, anime), while Singaporeans cannot live without them (due to the number of different languages spoken per square meter).

With more than 250 million speakers on this planet (and in space), Russian is the sixth most spoken language worldwide, the most spoken in Europe, and the second most used language on the Internet. Learning it may be very useful for communication not only in the Russian Federation (with a population of more than 140 million), but also in the former soviet spheres of influence in Europe and Asia, from Tallinn to Belgrade and from Warsaw to Astana. Learning Russian gives access to a fabulous literature, a very active scientific community, and an emerging economy expanding its presence on the international stage.

Therefore, in order to describe sounds surrounding us, we make use of onomatopoeic words. According to the Oxford Dictionaries, onomatopoeia is the “formation of a word from a sound associated with what is named”. But although a particular sound is probably heard similarly by people from different cultures, it is often expressed by the use of distinct associations of consonants and vowels. In this article, we will speak about the similarities and differences resulting from different language and cultural heritage in expressing physical and natural phenomena around us, with an emphasis on sounds made by animals.
